GPLC Literacy*AmeriCorps
GPLC Literacy*AmeriCorps is a national service program that mobilizes volunteers to take action in their communities. Literacy*AmeriCorps volunteers, or “members,” tutor students, both adults and youth, recruit community volunteers, participate in service projects, and help strengthen local literacy organizations. Literacy*AmeriCorps is administered by Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council.
The mission of Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council (GPLC) is to ensure that adults and families acquire reading, writing, math, English language, workforce skills, and computer skills so they may reach their fullest potential in life and participate productively in their community. Each year, GPLC helps several thousand individuals and families across Allegheny County through adult education programs and GED test prep classes. GPLC specializes in basic literacy programs for adults, helping individuals earn a GED, increase their employment options, or even simply read to their children. GPLC programs not only provide adult students with basic communication skills, they also help prepare participants for the job market by emphasizing computer skills.
